The Oak Island Bridge to Bridge Triathlon

What. An unbelievable. Experience.

I set my alarm for 5 a.m.— I wanted plenty of time to get up, eat breakfast, get all my stuff together, and get down to the race so I could get body marked and find a good place to set up my transition area, but I didn’t realize my alarm was set for weekdays only, so, uh… I got up 45 minutes later than I was planning to. I wasn’t going to let that throw me off, though. I ate breakfast—peanut butter on toast with a sliced banana and a bottle of water (+ vitamins and 3 advil, hah)—and made sure I had all my stuff, which, luckily, I pretty much had all laid out already, and headed up the road to the race location (conveniently 1/2 a mile from our house).

There were so many people already there when I walked up, and I could feel the air buzzing with race excitement. I made my way into the already really, really full transition area and found a spot to rack my bike and set everything up how I needed it. Once that was all set, I got my timing chip and I got body marked and I ventured to the ocean to check out the swim boundaries. The water couldn’t have BEEN more perfect. There were very few waves, and past the breakers it was calm as could be. No major currents. Perfect swimming conditions.

After surveying the ocean, I walked back to transition and familiarized myself with the swim in, bike out, bike in, and run out areas. I checked my area one last time and headed to the ocean for warm ups.

Warming up was the first time I had ever swam in the ocean in a fitness swimming type manner. The warm up, I gotta say, was difficult. I wasn’t too concerned, but I could definitely feel the water working against me as I swam out and back in.

After that we had an athletes meeting to go over courses, rules and safety tips. I wasn’t nervous at all, honestly. (50-60% of the athletes were also first timers.) I was just excited. I was feeling really strong—I knew I could do it, at that point I was just ready to get into it.

I was in the first heat for the swim start. We started waist deep in the water, just past the breakers, and on the alarm sound, we started swimming. My group wasn’t too many people, so I didn’t have to worry about being kicked or fighting for space or anything like that—there was plenty of room to spread out.

Getting ready to start! Why on earth am I at the front of the pack?

We’re off!

I felt like the swim was so quick. I was in the water, then I was running down the walkway towards my bike. They had baby pools set up to rinse your feet off as you ran through which was really helpful. I got to my area, threw on my socks, shoes, shorts, shirt, and helmet, de-racked my bike and ran off.

Biking out—that’s my game face, I think.

The bike was great. I felt really good about it, and I made great time. My ride was faster than any training ride I had done. The ride was a one lap ride, a giant rectangle that took us over both bridges on the island. The bridges were the most challenging part because of the steep hill climb.

Biking back in—jello legs and trying to mentally prepare for the run.

I rode in from the bike and almost fell over dismounting. My legs felt like jello and before I had even re-racked my bike I was wondering how on earth I was supposed to make them work so I could run. Before I had time to formulate an answer, I drank some water and ran off.

I felt like I was running so incredibly slowly, but I think maybe it just FELT that way. I didn’t to that badly on the run. It was just so difficult. It took me a while to find my stride and get my heart rate to a steady I’m-running-so-deal-with-it pace. I did eventually, and once I did it wasn’t so bad. It was challenging mostly because I couldn’t have music. I don’t ever run without music—so I made my own. I sang my song—I’ll Run by The Cab—in my head to keep me going. It worked until I was able to find my pace, then autopilot finally took over. My back started hurting around the last mile, and I swear the finish line was never going to appear.

But it did. And hearing him announce my name as I crossed was the most wonderful feeling in the entire world. I. Did. It. My parents were waiting right there at the finish line, and it just felt so good.

Sprinting through the finish line!

Here are my official race times:

1/3 Mile Swim: 12:52.
T1: 3:11.
18 Mile Bike: 1:06:24 (16.3 mph).
T2:  1:09:57.
4 Mile Run: 48:04 (12:01 mile).
Total time: 2:11:38.

Just after crossing the finish line.

A much more accurate depiction of how I felt.

Me and my mom.

Me and my dad.

I placed third in my age division, which I was not expecting at ALL. I was just sitting in the grass, watching the awards be presented, and they get to my age division and start announcing the third place female. He announced the time first and just as I was saying to myself, “Wait… that was my time…” he called my name and I was up getting my picture taken with the mayor. The girl who got second only beat me by 10.3 seconds.

I’ve always said that I wanted to do a triathlon. I honestly never thought I’d really go through with it… In all honesty I never thought I would be fit enough to actually be physically able to do something like that. But when I found this opportunity 8 weeks ago, I figured it was now or never.

If you want to do something… do it. Don’t wait around. Get out there and make it happen. I didn’t have a fancy training coach or a personally designed training program—just a lot of passion and dedication. I simply Googled around and I found a workout schedule and I followed it. I did nothing but work hard.

You can do absolutely anything you put your mind to. Don’t let other people intimidate you. Don’t let your own thoughts get in your way.

Hard work pays off, I promise.

I am a TRIATHLETE!

The race was amazing. Not only did I finish, but I finished third in my age division!

Full post coming tomorrow, but I just wanted to let you guys know that it went really well :)

I just picked up my race packet! I’m trying not to psych myself out—I know I can do this. Less anxiety, more confidence.

I went for a short run today—1.6 miles in 16 minutes! 9:52 pace, I think. I remember a year ago I was itching to be able to run a 10 minute mile, and now I can beat even that. It feels awesome.

I drove the bike route today—pretty intimidating, but I’m excited to just get into it. I hope once I’m on my bike I’ll be fine.

I’m planning to get there around 6:15 or 6:30 tomorrow morning to set up and get familiar with everything, so this WILL be my last post until after the race.

Wish me luck! Thanks for following me and encouraging me on this crazy ride… It all comes to head tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.!

Here goes nothing…
I’m leaving today for my first triathlon ever. I’m terrified.
I’m mostly just really anxious about the type of gear I have, which, I know, the dumbest thing to be anxious about. But… I won’t be wearing cycling shoes. I don’t have a fancy bathing suit. I don’t have a bike jersey or bike shorts. I just don’t want to be seen as a fool because I don’t have fancy gear, you know?
That’s honestly my biggest source of anxiety right now.
But this is my first race. So I don’t really know what to expect.
I’m scared. I’m excited. I’m ready to just… do this thing.
I probably won’t be updating again until after the race on Saturday.
Wish me luck. Please. I’m going to need it…

Training: Day 51

On the schedule: Bike 30 minutes

Another day closer.

Stats:

Distance: 10.10 miles
Pace: 4:13
Duration: 43:00, give or take

I did pretty good—my average speed was 13 mph, which is a little faster than what I have been riding.

I was going to swim today, but I honestly just didn’t feel like it. I could list off excuses, like I’m exhausted (true) and I have an exam tomorrow (also true), but they’re just excuses to make myself feel better about not going. I didn’t go. End of story, nothing I can do about it now.

At this point, I’m so ready for this race to just… happen.

Training: Day 49 and Day 50

Day 49—

On the schedule: Run 35 minutes, Swim 750 yards

Yesterday was such an ‘eh’ day for me. I was tired, I didn’t want to do anything, I was at the beach. I didn’t run, but I did walk 3 miles on the beach. I walked about an hour, so I figure that’s at least better than nothing. I didn’t swim because I couldn’t get into a pool. In all honesty I probably should have just swam in the ocean, but I’ll be honest—I don’t particularly like swimming in the ocean, and I didn’t really want to do that without proper supervision around.

Day 50—

On the schedule: Rest day

I went running this morning, and oh my god, it was so hot I thought I was going to die. I set off to only do a short run, so that was the mindset I was in. 2 miles in 23 minutes.

Wow. I can’t believe I am on the final week of this.

I am really down to the wire. The race is on Saturday, and I am so, so, so nervous and anxious and just… terrified. I had 3 different dreams last night about things going wrong. I tend to get anxiety when I try new things for the first time, and I’m getting major anxiety over this triathlon.

So if anybody has any helpful tips, tricks, words of encouragement, or any advice at all for my first triathlon… care to share?

Training: Day 40 and Day 41

I forgot to blog yesterday… oops. Just remember— no blog does NOT equal no workout!

Day 40—

On the schedule: Strength workout

So yesterday I knew had to get in the pool… It had been, gosh, almost 2 weeks I think since I last swam.

But I started with a run because it was surprisingly pleasant outside.

Stats:

Distance: 3.06 miles.
Pace: 11:50.
Duration: 36:19.

I got home from running, cooled off for a few minutes and headed off to swim. I swam 1050 yards in 30 minutes. Not the best, but hell, it’s better than nothing.

Day 41—

On the schedule: Bike 1 hour 15 minutes

Stats:

Distance: 20 miles (!)
Pace: 3:55 (!)
Duration: 1:18:36

YOU GUYS! A. That is my fastest ride to date, B. That is my FURTHEST ride to date, and C. It’s the first time I hit the distance I’ll be riding for my race.

I honestly think it has to do with the new pedals… I didn’t wear my cycling shoes today and I just felt more comfortable, which allowed me to ride faster and more confidently.

It’s such a relief to know that I can hit that distance, quite easily might I add, and still feel strong.

My race is two weeks from today. As in, 2 weeks from this very moment it’ll all be over… Oh goodness.

Training: Day 36 and Day 37

I didn’t update yesterday, I know, my bad, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t work out.

Day 36—

On the schedule: Rest day

NO REST FOR THE WICKED! I ran 35 minutes (just under 3 miles) and walked 60 minutes. I honestly don’t remember my pace since it recorded/averaged the run and the walk together, but I do know that I walked/ran 5.74 miles.

Day 37—

On the schedule: Bike 10 minutes, Run 30 minutes

I was going to skip today because I didn’t get back to my apartment until 3:30 and by the time I had unpacked it was going on 5:00. But I didn’t skip it because I knew I really couldn’t afford to…

So I went to the fitness center and ran 1 mile (11:12 pace) and then used the bike there instead of taking mine out. I rode 8.07 miles in 30 minutes.

I’m glad I didn’t skip— I’d feel awful if I had.

The race is in just over 2.5 weeks (oh my god…) so I have got to buckle down. Tomorrow I’m starting a better eating regimen and will hopefully be upping my workouts.

I’m getting (more) nervous (than I already was)… I just want to be able to finish the race in one piece.

Training: Day 29

On the schedule: Rest day

My first real rest day! Go me.

I did walk my dogs. But let’s be real, that doesn’t really count as training.

I drove home today, so instead of running and whatnot, my morning was spent packing and loading my car and driving home. I’ll be here for a week, so that means no swimming this week, which kind of sucks, but I’ll fill that with an extra bike ride or something.

Also, I think I might be getting normal pedals for my bike. The fancy ones just really stress me out to the point where I honestly don’t really even enjoy biking… so I’m pretty sure I’m getting regular pedals this week. Which kind of feels like a big relief, honestly. I feel awful since we spent the money for the shoes/pedals, but… It stresses me out. I do like them, but I’m still getting used to riding a street bike. Once I get more comfortable riding, I’ll still have the pedals, so I can get them changed back any time.

So that’s happening soon.

I have a bike ride tomorrow… so, uh, we’ll see how that goes, hah.

Training: Day 27

On the schedule: Bike 45 minutes

I can’t lie, I was dreading this when I woke up this morning. One, because my legs hurt, and two, because I really just didn’t want to go for a bike ride.

But I did, and it was actually really, really nice. I ended up mostly riding loops around this neighborhood that’s behind my apartment complex—very quite, relaxing, and just a great place to ride without having to worry about traffic.

Stats:

Distance: 12.31 miles
Pace: 4:17.
Duration: 52:54

That’s all I’m doing today. Like I said, my legs hurt and my body hurts and I am not doing anything else today except reading. And maybe going out for frozen yogurt. (Definitely going out for frozen yogurt.)

Training: Day 25

On the schedule: Bike 30 minutes

I woke up at 7 this morning. Ate a bowl of Cheerios with a sliced banana (the only way to eat Cheerios) and then went for my bike ride.

Stats:

Distance: 10.2 miles.
Pace: 4:30.
Duration: 46:01.

By the time I was finished with that it wasn’t even 9 a.m. And I was already going crazy. So I ate second breakfast (oatmeal, noms) and then decided I would just go for a walk to kill some time. But as soon as I started walking I was like, “RUN! WOOHOO! IT’S NOT THAT HOT.”

Well, yeah, at first it wasn’t so hot, but oh my god, it warmed up REAL fast.

So I walked 5 minutes, ran 10 minutes and did that for 5.48 miles (1:13:33). I ended up walking a little over 30 minutes and running 40 minutes.

And then… yeah, okay, I also went to the pool.

I walked up there (a mile from my apartment) and I swam for 25 minutes, but I’m not sure how far— I had to use the diving pool today which is 20 yards instead of 25 and I lost count on my laps after, uh, the first one.

So I was up at 7 and basically didn’t stop until I was home from swimming at 1:15. Even then, though, I took my roommate to pick up her car and then went out for a little bit with my other roommate.

Needless to say I am exhausted.

I’m not doing anything outside tomorrow (other than laying by the pool), so I am sleeping in, and I cannot wait.

I have a serious passion for running and eating. Not at the same time, though.
