Training: Day 22
On the schedule: Rest Day
I try to take rest days… Really, I do. I just get so bored, and if I’m just sitting around, I figure why not go do something productive? Because if I don’t, honestly, I’ll want to sit around and eat for the hell of it.
So I went to the gym today and ran the track for 10 minutes, then walked the track for 10 minutes, then ran the track for 10...

Training: Day 21
On the schedule: Run 40 minutes, Swim 750 yards
I woke up this morning around 9:30, ate breakfast and went to run and swim and wasn’t out of the shower until 3:15. Crazy.
Anyways.
Run stats:
Distance: 5 miles. Pace: 11:24. Duration: 57:12.
Swim:
20 minutes. 800 yards.
Hope you guys have had a good day—I’ve been celebrating my favorite band with a lot of my friends today....

Training: Day 20
On the schedule: Bike 1 hour
TWENTY DAYS! Have I really been working towards this for 20 days now? Sure as hell doesn’t feel like it.
Anyways, this morning was gross. It was unbelievably humid and sticky and just yuck. But I rode anyways, and uh, I guess it was successful? I fell over once because those damn pedals. I really don’t think I like them much… but I can’t do a...

Training: Day 19
On the schedule: Strength
Today was a lot busier than I really intended for it to be in terms of the workout… Oops?
I went to the gym and did the elliptical for 10 minutes, walked the track for 10 minutes, ran the track for 10 minutes, then did my strength work.
And then I went to the pool since I couldn’t yesterday. I swam 20 laps (1,000 yards) in 28 minutes.
That’s...

Training: Day 18
On the schedule: Swim 600 yards.
I couldn’t get into the pool today, like every Thursday, so swimming will take place tomorrow afternoon.
That said, I did run this morning.
Stats:
Distance: 3.35 miles Pace: 11:42 Duration: 39:22
It was hot this morning, hotter than it is now, I think.
Anyways… that’s all.
Training’s going well, I think. I mean, I’m keeping...

Training: Day 17
On the schedule: Run 20 minutes, Strength workout
This morning it was cold and rainy and where did my 80 degree sunshine disappear to!?
I went to the gym after class and ran for 25 minutes on the track—I’m not sure how far since my app won’t map inside runs. After that I switched to 10 minutes of alternating running/walking lap by lap.
Then about 40-45 minutes of...

Training: Day 16
On the schedule: Bike 35 minutes.
I totally forgot to bring my watch on my ride this morning, so I just kind of… winged it.
Stats:
Distance: 9.72 miles. Pace: 4:53 minutes/mile. Duration: 47:44.
I’m still not totally confident on the bike… so I find that bike days are generally more stressful than other days in terms of the workout. I don’t really know what to do to get...

Training: Day 15
On the schedule: Rest day.
Can’t believe I’m already starting on week 3 of this… Crazy.
Anyways, today was supposed to be a rest day, but I didn’t get to do my swim yesterday (400 yards), so I did it today.
I swam 750 yards in 20 minutes.
And that’s all I did/am doing today because I’m exhausted.
I could honestly go for a serious nap right now which, for...

Training: Day 14
On the schedule: Run 35 minutes, Swim 400 yards
I know yesterday I was contemplating taking today as a rest day, but… Well, you should know by now that I’m incapable of rest days. I tried. But. I was bored and stressed out and my running shoes were taunting me.
Stats:
Distance: 4.16 miles. Pace: 11:56. Duration: 49:47.
I didn’t make it to the pool—I wasn’t back at...

Training: Day 13
On the schedule: bike 50 minutes.
Yes, I did still do my bike ride after the race today.
Stats:
Distance: 12.95 miles.
Pace: 4:10 minutes/mile.
Duration: 54:16.
Needless to say I’m going to sleep so well tonight.
I’m thinking tomorrow is going to turn into an off day. I’m supposed to swim, but I’m 90% sure I won’t be able to make it to the pool. I’ll...

Training: Day 12
On the schedule: Rest day.
There ain’t no rest for the wicked.
I ran for 20 minutes on the track at the gym this morning, so I probably ran something between 1.75 and 2 miles. I can’t count my laps/it’s annoying to tick it off on my phone every single lap/my running app won’t map it when I run inside.
After that I went to do my swim from yesterday. I swam for 30 minutes...

Training: Day 11
On the schedule: Bike 30 minutes, Swim 500 yards
I can’t believe it’s already been almost 2 weeks. It’s crazy to think that race day is 6 weeks from Saturday… Yeesh.
Anyways, today we did circuit training in my PED class, so I did about 20 minutes of circuit.
After that I went for a short run back to my apartment (Distance: 1.47 miles, Pace: 11:34, Duration: 17:04) since...

Training: Day 10
On the schedule: Run 20 minutes, Strength workout
Yes, it’s not even 10 in the morning and I can already make this post. I’ve been up since 5—don’t ask me why because I honestly don’t know. I went to sleep at midnight; there’s no reason I should have woken up at 5. But alas. I kind of think it’s stress related.
I could have sworn the run today was 35...

Training: Day 9
On the schedule: Bike 40 minutes.
Today has been insane, but in a good way, I think. Busy, busy, busy, that’s for sure.
I ran before class this morning (Distance: 2.25 miles, Pace: 11:44, Duration: 26:26), and about 10 minutes in my headphones completely died. Except they didn’t completely die because some songs I could hear the instrumentals and some I could hear backing vocals and...

Training: Day 8
On the schedule: Rest day.
Who’s surprised that I didn’t actually take a rest day? In my defense, I have a race on Saturday, so I’m trying to prepare for that, too.
I didn’t do all that much. I went to the gym to do a round of strength training, but couldn’t resist running while I was there. So I ran for 10 minutes and then did about 45 minutes on the weight...

Training: Day 7
On the schedule: Run or walk 20 minutes, swim 300 yards.
Some mornings I wake up and I’m excited because I get to eat breakfast.
This morning I woke up and I was excited because I wanted to go running.
I went over by the ocean and did 2 loops on the loop trail, one running, one walking. The run was one of my best ever.
Stats:
Distance: 3 miles. Pace: 10:04. Duration: 30:25.
I’m...

Training: Day 6
On the schedule: Bike 45 minutes.
I tried to go out early enough this morning so that there wouldn’t be a trillion people everywhere. I was mostly successful.
Stats:
Distance: 11.4 miles. Speed: 12 mph. Duration: 55:04.
I found a really quiet neighborhood back behind my apartment complex, so I rode laps around there for a little while.
I think I’m slowly but surely getting the...

Anonymous asked: you're doing good for a beginner. swimming a 3min/100m, dont know how long the swim is for your race but pros can swim in the 1-1:15 range even for open water! swimming is hard to get great at later in life. you have to work on all your inefficiencies (form) and do fitness/strength work; paddles are great for this. i dont know if you need a hard goal just work on getting the time down. also...

Training: Day 5
On the schedule: Rest day.
But I didn’t take a rest day. I didn’t do anything yesterday since I couldn’t get into the pool, so today I went running and swimming.
Run stats:
Distance: 2.67 miles. Pace: 10:22 . Duration: 27:46.
I ran the loop over near the beach. 10:22 is the fastest pace I’ve ever done, so I’m proud of that.
Yesterday I was supposed to swim 400...

Training: Day 4
On the schedule: Swim 400 yards.
Well, this would have been a lot easier if I had been able to access a pool.
Our pool at school only has hours 12-2 and 8:30-10. I have class 12-2, so I was going to head over at 8:30 and do this thing.
I walked 20 minutes across campus only to find that, oh, the pool wasn’t doing rec swim hours tonight. (Except I’m 90% sure they were—the...

A Spontaneous 10k? Sure, why not!
I’ve been thinking about it for a few days, and I finally decided that in addition to training for the tri, I’m also going to be running a 10k a week from Saturday!
I’ve run lots of 5ks, but I’ve been wanting to do something a little bit longer for a while. I was always skeptical/kind of scared because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to handle the distance, but as...

Training: Day 3
On the schedule: Walk or run 20 minutes, Strength workout
I can already tell it’s going to be hard for me to follow this schedule to a T. Not because I can’t keep up, but because I want to push myself further.
I went to the gym after class to go out to knock out my strength workout. Here’s the thing: I hate strength training. I don’t find any amount of enjoyment in it; I...

Training: Day 2
I am happy to say that today’s training was awesome.
Today I was supposed to bike for 30 minutes.
Except… Okay, here’s my problem. I love running. If I skip more than one day in a row of running, then certain parts of my brain malfunction or something and I simply feel like I cannot go on living. No, but in all honesty running is my first love here. Yeah, I’m training to...

Training: Day 1
RAGING SUCCESS.
Just kidding—day 1 was technically a rest day. And since I rarely skip a day of running, I actually did take today to rest.
My head’s been in a strange place today—it hasn’t been the best day, but I’m hoping that tomorrow’s better.
Since I don’t have any progress reports to write about today, I thought I’d give you a little...

Sunday--8 weeks out.
Is 2 months out too soon to already have race anxiety? I had some weird dreams that kept me up last night about the race—I don’t really remember what they were about, mostly about not being able to finish, I guess.
I finally pulled out my training schedule and took a good look at it—needless to say it’s going to be quite challenging. But I’m still looking forward to...

Friday Run.
Distance: 2.1 miles. Pace: 11:33. Duration: 24:04.
It’s amazing to me how mental running really is. If I don’t set out with the right mindset, then the whole run becomes more and more difficult than it really needs to be.
I woke up this morning and it was raining. I wasn’t going to run today, because of the rain and because I’ve been every day this week, and every day...

6.5 Miles.
Distance: 6.5 miles. Pace: 12:18. Duration: 1:19:52.
I ran 6.5 miles today. Six. And a half.
I’ve been contemplating signing up to run a 10K that’s in 2 weeks, but I’ve been a little afraid to because I didn’t think I would be able to run the distance. I didn’t want to get out there and humiliate myself—though the only way I would do that is if I didn’t...
